Deck Maintenance | Fall in Love With Your Deck This Spring

The ideal place to spend time with loved ones, enjoy a beautiful view, entertain guests, or just relax is a comfortable and inviting deck in your backyard. If possible, this space should not be limited to indoors. Your deck could use some love after a long winter. The amount of deck maintenance you can expect depends on the materials it is made of. A wooden deck may include applying a fresh coat of paint, replacing rotten boards, or hiring a deck builder for a major repair. However composite decks require minimal work and maintenance in order to enjoy your outdoor oasis in spring.

Spring Deck Maintenance tips

Clean Your Deck

Before setting up your furniture, plants, and decorations, you’ll want your Deck to be nice and clean. To get rid of dead leaves, dirt, & debris a high-power leaf blower will do the trick. Mold, soil, and rotting wood should be taken care of with a power washer.

Take Care of Nails and Screws

Now that your deck is clean look it over for nails and screws that may have come loose. Replace or fasten them down to prevent snags, tripping hazards, and loose boards in your deck.

Touch-up or Re-Seal Your Wood Deck

If you have a wood deck it is important to include re-staining & sealing or painting in your deck maintenance routine. Application every few years can protect your wood deck from rot. Staining & sealing allows the wood to breath and water to dissipate readily. Standing water on a painted deck can cause other problems.

Check your Furniture and Accessories

If your furniture and accessories have been left out over the winter it is smart to wash them down and check for rot and other damage. We recommend inspecting furniture, grills, planters, decorations, & lights. A spray bottle of water and a sponge can go a long way in most cases. Air out any fabrics and cushions to prevent mold.

Assess other Landscape Features

Now is a good time to look to your paver patios as well. Replace broken pavers, re-apply polymeric sand, and seal your patio as needed so you can enjoy your patio as well.

Refresh your landscape with mulch topdressing and landscape plantings. Hanging baskets and containers are a great addition as well

Personalize your Deck

Use furniture, pillows, plants, and lights to highlight both your home and your personality.

A deck can create two rooms from none.

Deck Design

The spring is the perfect time to improve the functionality of your deck. Consider working with a custom deck builder or landscape designer to add on screened in sections, pergolas, or covered roofs. Screened in decks and patios are not only beneficial in warm weather, but they can also help keep bugs out, protect your furniture from damage, and provide privacy from neighbors.
