Hearts & Hammers | A Rainy Day Rescue
May 31st, 2024 – Last Friday, Landscapes Unlimited’s dedicated team partnered with Hearts & Hammers, a non-profit that helps low-income homeowners with deteriorating home exteriors, by braving the rain to assist a local homeowner with limited mobility in saving her yard from becoming overgrown or at risk for erosion.
“I’ve lived in my home for over 20 years,” states the homeowner, “but since COVID I haven’t been able to care for my home, and it has gotten out of hand.” With the combined efforts of our office staff and one of our maintenance crews, we set to rescue her landscaping, ensuring ease of access and longevity for years to come.

Rain or Shine | Delivering Results That Matter
Our team began the morning by constructing a boulder wall to stabilize the property’ sloped garden beds and prevent washouts. We tackled the front yard’s overgrown gardens by hand-weeding and removing infestations of Spider Wart and grasses, before adding mulch to further protect the gardens from runoff.
The side yards required further weeding and removal of various overgrown shrubs that greatly reduced access to the back of the property. Our Services Manager stopped by on his way to other client’s jobsites to assist in pruning a tall shrub that had blocked access to the side of the homeowner’s yard, as well as trim back a large lilac shrub that has resided on the property for over 30 years.
For the backyard, the homeowner requested a space to plant flowers and enjoy her backyard. However, her garden beds included layers of mulch and were overrun with weeds, making planting difficult. Our team cleared out all of the mulch and overgrown weeds that had taken over her garden beds and reinstalled the edging around her beds. We were also able to apply grass seed to improve her yard even further, especially under her newly pruned lilac shrub. This left the homeowner with a space that she could easily plant flowers or sit and enjoy her revived landscape.
Landscaping Transformations
Despite the rainy weather, we couldn’t be more proud of the transformation we were able to accomplish and hearing the homeowner’s gratitude made it all worth it. At Landscapes Unlimited we put our community first and believe that making a difference begins with one small action. Our team’s dedication brought new life to the homeowner’s landscape and we look forward to the next opportunity to support our neighbors and local community.
A heartfelt thank you to Hearts & Hammers for partnering with us in this rewarding day of volunteering!
